Chile’s 640 MW Sol del Loa solar plant gets environmental approval

The government of the Chilean region of Antofagasta has approved the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the 640 MW Sol Del Loa solar power plant, which will be located in the municipalities of María Elena and Pozo Almonte in the Tarapaca region (northern Chile).

The US$480m Sol del Loa project will see the deployment of more than 1.45 million solar modules of 550 W each, in an area of approximately 500 hectares. It will also comprise battery energy storage areas, for a total capacity of 10.4 GWh. The first 448 MW phase of the project is expected to come into operation in September 2023, while the second phase (192 MW) should be commissioned in March 2025. Sol del Loa is projected to generate 1,680 GWh/year of power, which will be injected into the Chile’s National Electricity System.

At end-2021, solar accounted for 15% of Chile's installed capacity with 4.7 GW. The country commissioned 1.1 GW of solar projects in 2021. Around 3.5 GW of solar projects are currently under construction in the country and more than 27 GW are under development.
