Chile will phase out coal-fired power plants by 2050

The Chilean government has pledged to phase out coal-fired power plants by 2050 and will work jointly with Enel, Engie, AES Genes and Colbun to reach this objective. These power producers have committed themselves to stopping the development of new coal projects that do not have carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems or other equivalent technologies. A working group will be created and coordinated by the Ministry of Energy to analyse the domestic power generation system in the context of the objectives of the 2050 Energy Policy.

In 2016, coal-fired power plants accounted for 20% of Chile's installed power capacity (4.8 GW out of 24 GW) but for over 40% of the country's power generation. The last 28 coal-fired facilities will be closed by 2050 if they do not have carbon capture and storage systems.

Chile expects to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 30% by 2030 and intends to have a 90% renewable energies share in its energy mix by 2050.
