The Chilean Government has published the list of the first eight carbon projects eligible for payment of the National Green Tax Emissions Offsetting System. All eight selected projects are in the power generation sector, and they represent almost 260 ktCO2eq of emission reductions. All the approved reductions were traded and used for the offsetting of emissions by 4 taxable subjects, representing 5% of a total of 87 issuers subject to the Green Tax. The approved projects consist of 6 run-of-the-river hydroelectric power plants with a combined capacity of 83 MW, a 10 MW solar PV plant and a 110 MW wind project.
In October 2023, Chile launched the Green Tax Emissions Compensation System, an emission trading scheme (ETS) that targets facilities that exceeded 100 tons of particulate matter per year and/or 250 kt of CO2 per year, according to the 2023 emissions report.
