Chile opens to public consultation its updated NDC for 2025-2035

The Chilean Ministry of Environment has presented the draft of its 2025-2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for public consultation. The document contemplates the definition of a new GHG budget (1,100 MtCO2eq between 2020 and 2030) to control and reduce the level of GHG emissions, to reach a peak of emissions in 2025, and to reach a GHG emissions level of 95 MtCO2eq by 2030. In addition, Chile commits to a national GHG emissions budget of no more than 490 MtCO2eq between 2031 and 2035, and to reach a GHG emissions level of 91 MtCO2eq by 2035. To ensure compliance with the national GHG emissions budget, Chile plans to elaborate, implement and update 7 sectoral mitigation plans on high emitting sectors (Transport, Energy, Cities, Mining, Infrastructure, Waste and Agriculture).

The draft also proposes to close and/or reconvert all its coal-fired power plants by 2040, to advance in concrete policies and plans to reduce emissions of methane through recycling and waste recovery to minimize its generation, to prioritize the development of green hydrogen (potential to reduce 8 MtCO2eq per year by 2035), and to establish an energy efficiency target for 2035.

The update of Chile's NDC constitutes the framework of Chile's renewed commitment to keep the global average temperature below 1.5°C and to mobilise public and private investments on the path to low-carbon and climate-resilient low-carbon development that considers the economic, social and environmental variables for the 2025-2035 period.  The draft update will be open to public comment until 11 April 2025.
