Chile's Environmental Assessment Commission has unanimously approved the environmental permit for the HNH Energy green hydrogen and ammonia project in the Magallanes region, Chile (HNH Energy press release, 27/08/2026). The USD11bn project, backed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, AustriaEnergy and Oekowind is planned to be developed in the San Gregorio area, northeast of Punta Arenas. Following environmental approval, the developers are expected to seek sectoral permits, finalise financing and complete technical and commercial studies.
The approved first phase comprises a 1.4 GW wind farm with 194 turbines, a 3 GW electrolyser, a 300 MWh BESS that could be expanded by 700 MWh in a second phase to reach 1 GWh, green ammonia production facilities (1.3 Mt/year), desalination and water treatment plants, ammonia storage (180 kt), and a 10 Mt/year ammonia export terminal on the Strait of Magellan. It is expected to produce around 6,600 t/day of green ammonia.
