Chile approves AES Andes' coal-fired power plant conversion project

AES Andes, the South American subsidiary of the US energy company AES, has received environmental approval from the Chilean authorities for its Alba project that seeks to convert the Angamos coal-fired power plant located in Mejillones (Antofagasta region, northeast Chile) into a large storage system using solar salts.

The project intends to completely eliminate the use of coal at the Angamos power plant and use solar salts, that would be heated with electrical energy from renewable sources, to be stored and later used in the generation of electricity, reaching a power of 560 MW with both units in operation. According to AES Andes, this would be the first project in the world that plans to use solar salts to convert a coal-fired power plant, without greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

AES Andes is an energy company based in Chile and is a subsidiary of the global company AES Corporation. The company is a producer and distributor of electricity in Chile, owning a portfolio of 3,864 MW, made up of 2,129 MW from thermal power, 771 MW from hydropower, 429 MW from solar PV, 348 MW from wind, and 13 MW from biomass sources, in addition to 174 MW of energy storage batteries, seawater desalination plants, and transmission lines.
