Chevron and partners greenlight Leviathan expansion to reach 21 bcm/year (Israel)

Chevron and its partners have taken a final investment decision (FID) on a project to expand the production capacity of the Leviathan offshore gas field in Israel (Chevron press release, 16/01/2026). Chevron confirmed the expansion as part of its efforts to raise total gas deliveries to Israel and the wider region to approximately 21 bcm/year from the Leviathan reservoir. The field currently produces around 12 bcm/year.

  • In December 2025, Israel issued a permit authorising the export of natural gas produced from the Leviathan reservoir to Egypt. An export agreement between Israel and Chevron, along with its partners, was previously signed in August 2025. Under the agreement, Israel will export around 130 bcm of gas from the Leviathan field, whose total reserves are estimated at 600 bcm, to Egypt through 2040, or until the contracted volumes are fully delivered (KEI, 19/12/2025).
  • The Leviathan field’s working interest owners are Chevron, the operator (40%), along with the Israeli companies NewMed Energy (45%) and Ratio Energies (15%).

Israel currently has three operational offshore gas fields, with Leviathan being the largest. Leviathan began production at the end of 2019. The expansion project is scheduled for completion, with additional gas production coming on stream in the second half of 2029.
