Changjiang-1 and Yangjiang-3 nuclear units reach criticality (China)

Two nuclear reactors under construction in southern China have reached first criticality.

The first unit of the Changjiang nuclear power plant, being built by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) in the island province of Hainan, has reached first criticality. The project is owns by CNNC (51%) and China Huaneng Group (49%). Construction began with the pouring of first concrete in 2010. The Changjiang plant consists of two 610 MW units, with the first one expected to be commissioned by the end of 2015 and the second in 2016. The project will eventually comprise four units, with units 3 and 4 housing either CNP-650 or ACP-600 reactors. Construction of both those units is scheduled to begin by 2018.

In the Guangdong province, the first unit of the Yangjiang nuclear project reached first criticality. The nuclear project, developed by China General Nuclear Power Group (CGNPC), consists of six units of 1,000 MW. The first reactor was commissioned in 2014 and the second in June 2015. The entire project will be operational in early 2019. When fully operational, it will generate about 48 TWh/year.
