CGNPC delays Taishan nuclear power project commissioning (China)

China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC) has updated the completion timeline for its Taishan nuclear power project in Guangdong (China), whose first unit is in the commissioning phase and second unit in the equipment installation phase.

The Taishan nuclear project is developed by the Guangdong Taishan Nuclear Power Joint Venture Company Limited, a joint venture between CGNPC with 70% and EDF (30%). The project will feature two Areva's EPR reactors of 1,750 MW each and construction started in 2009. The first reactor was expected to begin commercial operation in 2016 but was delayed to the first half of 2017 (cold test in January 2016 and start of hot test in November 2016), with the second starting up in 2017.

The company now plans to commission the first unit in the second half of 2017 and the second one in the first half of 2018. The delay will enable CGNPC to "conduct more experimental verifications in respect of its design and equipment, which accordingly requires longer engineering construction time", since no nuclear power generating unit with the EPR technology has been put into commercial operation across the world.
