CGN starts full operations on a 1 GW offshore wind project in southern China

China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) has announced the start of full-capacity operations on a 1 GW offshore wind power project, located in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (southern China). The wind power plant, situated off the port of Huizhou (Guangdong), will be able to produce 3 TWh/year of electricity, reduce coal use by about 1 Mt and offset emissions by about 2.4 MtCO2/year.

The project was developed in two phases, a first 250 MW phase which started construction in 2020 (completed in 2021), and a second 750 MW phase which started construction in March 2023 (completed in December 2023). The wind plant comprises 104 wind turbines.

In 2022, China’s installed capacity for renewables surpassed 1,100 GW (with 413 GW for hydro, 365 GW for wind and 393 GW for solar). The country plans to reach 1,200 MW of wind and solar capacity by 2030.
