CGN starts construction of two nuclear units at Ningde and Shidaowan (China)

China General Nuclear (CGN) has announced the start of construction of two nuclear units, namely Unit 5 of the Ningde nuclear power plant in Fujian Province (south-eastern China) and Unit 1 of the Shidaowan plant in Shandong Province (north-eastern China). The two units, which are both 1 GW Hualong One reactors, were approved by China's State Council in late July 2023.

The Ningde power plant currently comprises four 1,018 MW CPR-1000 reactors, which began commercial operation between April 2013 and July 2016. A sixth unit has been approved for construction. For the Shidaowan nuclear power plant, a second unit is also under development.

At the end of 2023, China’s nuclear capacity reached 56.9 GW and its nuclear power generation reached nearly 435 TWh (around 5% of the power mix). China targets 200 GW of nuclear capacity by 2035. The country currently has over 32 GW of nuclear capacity under construction and 172 GW under development.
