CGN starts building 1.2 GW Unit 1 of the Lufeng nuclear plant in Guangdong (China)

The China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) has announced the start of construction on Unit 1 of the Lufeng nuclear power plant, located in China's Guangdong Province. The 1.2 GW CAP-1000 reactor, a third-generation pressurized water reactor (PWR) design, will incorporate modular construction, digital building technologies and automated welding.

A total of six reactors have been planned for the nuclear plant. Construction of Units 5 and 6 began in 2022 and 2023, respectively, utilising Chinese-designed third-generation Hualong One reactors rated 1,250 MW each. Once all six reactors are fully operational, the Lufeng nuclear plant is expected to generate about 52 TWh/year of electricity.

At the end of 2023, China’s nuclear capacity reached 56.9 GW (with 56 operational reactors) and its nuclear power generation reached nearly 435 TWh (around 5% of the power mix). China targets 200 GW of nuclear capacity by 2035.
