CGN commissions a 1.1 GW nuclear unit at Hongyanhe (China)

The Chinese state-owned energy group China General Nuclear Power (CGN) has started commercial operations at the unit 6 (1.1 GW) of the Hongyanhe nuclear power plant in Liaoning. The plant comprises six units, with an annual generation of 48 TWh/year. The annual power generation of the six units at Hongyanhe can reach 48 TWh, accounting for about 20% of electricity consumption in Liaoning.

This sixth reactor is the second of two ACPR-1000 reactors built for the second phase of the nuclear power plant, as unit 5 entered commercial operation in July 2021. The construction of the first phase (units 1 through 4), comprised of four CPR-1000 reactors, began in 2009 and ended in 2016.

In 2021, China’s nuclear capacity reached 53.3 GW (+7% compared to 2020) and its nuclear power generation reached 408 TWh (+11.3% compared to 2020).
