CGN awards EPC contract for 2 GW Lufeng nuclear project (China)

China General Nuclear (CGN) has signed an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract framework agreement with Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute (SNERDI) for the construction of two 1,000 MW nuclear units in Lufeng (Guangdong, China). In October 2012, when approvals for inland nuclear projects were deferred to 2015, CGN decided to relocate the units from the inland site of Xianning (Hubei province) to Lufeng. The group plans to build two AP1000 units on this site, where 6 CPR-1,000 reactors had been planned. CGN received approval in March 2013 and preparatory work, including the preliminary design, document preparation for the licence application and the procurement of long-lead equipment, has been underway since the beginning of this year. Construction could start as early as 2014.

China is currently building four AP-1000 reactors, in Sanmen (project developed by China National Nuclear Corporation) and in Haiyang (project developed by China Power Investment Corp); Sanmen should be operational in 2014 and the three others by 2016.
