CFE (Mexico) plans to tender 8 CCGT power projects by March 2021

Mexico’s state-owned power company Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) plans to tender the construction of 8 CCGT power projects by the end of March 2021. The first tender would be issued on 18 August 2020 for the 164 MW Baja California Sur CCGT project and would be followed by a tender each month until the tender of a 455 MW unit for the Norte-4 (Lerdo) CCGT project on 23 March 2021. Six other CCGT projects will be concerned, including 527 MW Baja California IV Cerro Prieto, 521 MW Mérida, 752 MW Riviera Maya, 1,086 MW Tuxpan Phase 1,875 MW Salamanca, and 422 MW Tula II-1. The power projects are expected to be commissioned between December 2023 (Baja California Sur and Mérida) and May 2024.

Earlier in July 2020, CFE has decided to suspend three CCGT power projects, namely the 837 MW Salamanca, 42 MW Baja California Sur VI, 790 MW San Luis Potosi, and the 25 MW Los Humeros III Fase B geothermal power plant, due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company cancelled the tender and financing (around MXN 23.5bn, i.e. over US$1bn) for the projects, which could still be developed at a later stage.
