Cepsa and Yara partner to develop a 750 kt/year green ammonia plant in Spain

The Spanish energy company Cepsa and the Norwegian chemical group Yara Clean Ammonia have partnered to develop the first green hydrogen corridor between the ports of Algeciras (Spain) and Rotterdam (Netherlands). The two companies will develop the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley project, where Cepsa plans to build a €1bn green ammonia plant in San Roque, Cádiz (near the port of Algeciras), with a production capacity of up to 750 kt/year. The ammonia plant will be the largest in Europe and is expected to offset the emission of 3 MtCO2/year once operational in 2027. The Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley project will be comprised of a total of 2 GW of electrolysis capacity and will require an overall investment of €3bn.

The partnership also entails that Yara will supply Cepsa with green ammonia volumes, which will allow the Spanish company to establish its green hydrogen corridor and lead the initiative to serve customers in Rotterdam and Central Europe. Cepsa also signed an agreement with Dutch company Gasunie to guarantee access to its green hydrogen transport network in the Netherlands.
