Centrica sells 2.3 GW of combined cycle UK plants to EPH

The British energy group Centrica has sold two gas-fired combined cycle (CCGT) power plants to EP UK Investments, a subsidiary of the Czech company EPH (Energeticky a Prumyslovy Holding) in the United Kingdom. Centrica has been scrapping coal, gas and nuclear assets in recent years and is moving away from traditional energy.

The facilities, namely the Langage power plant in the Plymouth region and the South Humber Bank plant in Stallingborough have a combined capacity of 2.3 GW. The £318m (US$405m) transaction is still subject to the EU merger clearance and the EU decision is expected in the second half of 2017.

EPH already owns several power stations in the UK, namely the 2 GW Eggborough and the 420 MW Lynemouth coal-fired facilities. Lynemouth stopped generating power in December 2016 under the current environmental rules but is due to be converted to burn wood pellets and reopen within 18 months. Eggborough Power, the subsidiary of EPH in charge of operating the Eggborough plant, has applied to the British authorities to demolish the coal-fired facility and build a new 2.5 GW CCGT on the site.
