Centrica confirms life extensions for two UK nuclear power stations (2.2 GW)

The UK-based energy group Centrica has announced that the operational lives of two UK nuclear power stations, namely Heysham 1 (1.2 GW) and Hartlepool (1.1 GW), have been extended until March 2028. Centrica holds a 20% stake in these facilities, which are operated by EDF. However, the planned closure of the Heysham 2 nuclear station in March 2030 remains unchanged.

In addition to the life extensions, Centrica acquired a 15% stake in July 2025 in the Sizewell C nuclear project, a new 3.2 GW nuclear power plant currently under construction in Suffolk (UK). The project, supported by EDF, the UK government, and the Canadian pension fund La Caisse, is expected to provide low-carbon electricity for at least 60 years.

The United Kingdom aims to expand its nuclear power capacity to 24 GW by 2050. As of the end of 2024, the country’s installed nuclear capacity stood at 5.9 GW.
