CEEC secures contract for 500 MW/1,000 MWh Nefertiti BESS project in Egypt

The China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) has secured an EPC contract for the 500 MW/1,000 MWh Nefertiti BESS facility in Benban, Egypt (CEEC press release, 25/02/2026). The contract was won by a consortium led by China Energy International Group (a subsidiary of CEEC), with Zhejiang Thermal Power Construction, China Power Engineering Consulting Group, and Southwest Electric Power Design Institute.

The contract covers the full construction of a 220 kV substation and storage plant, plus grid upgrades and local technical training. The project is located within the Aswan Benban solar power plant in Egypt and once operational it is expected to provide 1 GWh of peak-shaving capacity, boosting Egypt’s grid stability.

Egypt aims to achieve 42% of renewables in its power mix and to reduce GHG emissions by 37% in 2030.
