Ceara (Brazil) signs MoU for a 1.2 Mt/year green hydrogen project

The Government of the Brazilian state of Ceará has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Spanish green hydrogen developer Grupo Jepri for the development of a €3.3bn (US$3.6bn) green hydrogen project in the Pecem Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP) in Ceará. Located in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza, the project is scheduled to begin construction works in 2025, with hydrogen generation expected to start around the end of 2026 or beginning of 2027, with the capacity of producing up to 1.2 Mt/year of green hydrogen. The green hydrogen project is expected to receive a total governmental investment of $17.9bn, to generate 1 Mt/year of green hydrogen and 6 GW of energy in 2030.

The Pecem Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP) is a joint venture, formed by the State of Ceará (Brazil) and the Port of Rotterdam (Netherlands) conceived and designed to be an industrial and port space.

Brazil counted with a total installed capacity of 206 GW (end-2022), with hydroelectricity dominating the installed capacity (53%) and other renewables accounting for another 31%.
