Capital Energy will develop a 510 MW floating wind project in Galicia (Spain)

The Spanish renewable energy company Capital Energy plans to develop an up to 510 MW floating offshore wind project, named Breogán, which would be located off the coasts of A Coruña and Lugo, in north-western Spain. The wind park will be made up of 34 wind turbines, each with a power of 15 MW, and is expected to require an investment of about €2bn. The project will also comprise the installation of 34 semi-submersible floating structures, an offshore substation, a cable anchored on the seabed, and a high-voltage land cable of 220 kV.

In November 2022, IberBlue Wind, a joint venture between Irish company Simply Blue Group and Spanish companies Proes Consultores, Amper Group, and FF NEV, also announced plans to develop a 990 MW floating offshore wind project in the Alboran Sea, off the coast of Cadiz and Malaga in Andalusia, southern Spain.

At the end of 2021, Spain only had 5 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (but 28 GW for onshore wind).  In December 2021, the Spanish government approved the Roadmap for the Development of Offshore Wind and Marine Energy Development, which targets 1 to 3 GW of floating offshore wind by 2030.
