The Spanish renewable energy project developer Capital Energy has submitted environmental assessment applications to develop three floating offshore wind parks totalling 2 GW in Portugal. The applications were submitted to the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).
Capital Energy plans to develop the Parque Eólico Offshore Barlavento and Parque Eólico Offshore Caravela (600 MW and 40 wind turbines each), as well as the Parque Eólico Offshore Âncora (765 MW, 51 wind turbines). All three floating wind projects are planned to use wind turbines with a nominal capacity of 15 MW per unit. The Barlavento wind park will be located near Figueira da Foz (central Portugal), the Caravela project off Viana do Castelo (North), and the Âncora project off Vila Nova de Gaia (North).
As of end-2022, wind represented 24% of Portugal’s installed capacity with 5.7 GW and 27% of its power generation with more than 13 TWh. The country plans to auction 10 GW of offshore wind capacity for the year 2023 and currently has more than 4 GW of wind capacity under development.
