Canada's NEB approves HydroQuebec's Northern Pass transmission project

The Canadian National Energy Board (NEB) has granted Canadian power company HydroQuébec a permit to build and operate its Québec–New Hampshire international power transmission line. This project, also known as the Northern Pass transmission (NPT) project, consists in a 320-kV direct current (DC) transmission line spreading across 80 km and connecting the Des Cantons substation in Val-Joli (Canada) to Franklin substation in southern New Hampshire (United States). A converter terminal would be built there to convert the electricity from DC to alternating current (AC).

The US$1.6bn interconnection line will have an export capacity to the United States of 1,090 MW. The NPT project is expected to be in service by the end of 2020. It received a positive Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) from the US Department of Energy (DOE) in August 2017. However, the New Hampshire Site Evaluation Committee (SEC) rejected the project in February 2018.
