Canada's crude oil and gas production rose in 2024, with higher exports to the US

Statistics Canada has released its energy statistics for the December 2024. In 2024, Canada produced a total of 23.7 million TJ (EJ) of primary energy (+2.5%), of which almost two-thirds of this energy was exported to the United States, including 100% of electricity and natural gas exports and over 95% of crude oil. The country’s production of crude oil and equivalent products rose by 4.3% to 11.8 EJ, and that of refined oil products remained stable at 4.4 EJ. Gas production increased by 2.3% to nearly 8 EJ and coal production fell by 9.9% to 1.1 EJ. Exports of crude oil, natural gas liquids and refined products increased by 5%, 13%, and 8%, respectively, driven by exports to the United States. In the case of natural gas, exports to the United States reached a record-breaking level in December 2024 (highest level since the start of the series in 2016).

In 2024, Canada's production of renewable fuels soared by 38% to 80 PJ  and that of primary electricity dipped by 2.7% to 1.7 EJ. This decline is due to a drop in hydropower generation (-4.9% in 2024, even if it increased by 11% in December 2024 alone) and in nuclear generation (-3.3%), which was partly offset by a 16% rise in wind power generation and a 12% growth in solar generation.
