Canada’s BC Hydro seeks proposals for 3 TWh/year of clean power

The Canadian energy group BC Hydro has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to acquire approximately 3 TWh/year of electricity, corresponding to around 5% of the company’s current supply. Proposed projects must be located in British Colombia (Canada), have a capacity comprised between 40 MW and 200 MW, qualify as a clean or renewable resource (including wind, solar, hydro, biomass, biogas and geothermal heat), have a minimum 25% equity ownership held by at least one First Nation, and be commissioned between 1 October 2028 and 1 October 2031.

BC Hydro has a capacity of 12.2 GW, almost exclusively consisting of hydro, including the 2.73 GW GM Shrum’s dam (2022). This will be the first in a series of calls for power, as BC Hydro requires more power to electrify British Columbia’s growing economy and meet the Province’s climate targets. Electricity demand is expected to increase by 15% over the decade.

In the Clean BC Roadmap 2030, British Columbia pledged to reach 100% of renewables in the power mix in 2030. It has already reached the 93% target set for 2016 in the 2010 Clean Energy Act.
