10 GW nuclear project in Ontario (Canada) starts impact assessment process

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has proposed the construction of a 10 GW nuclear power plant in Ontario, Canada (Canadian government press release, 12/01/2026). The New Nuclear at Wesleyville project is currently being assessed by the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), which has opened a public call to receive feedback on the project to prepare the impact assessment process. The call will close on 11 February 2026.

The project, as proposed, would have a total capacity of 10 GW, enough to power 10 million homes over an estimated 78-year lifespan.  The project has not yet selected a reactor technology but is currently considering different technologies as part of a “Plant Parameter Envelope” approach that considers pressurised water reactor, pressurised heavy water reactor, and boiling water reactor technology. The project is expected to prepare the site in 2030, start construction works in 2033 to commission the first unit in 2040 and the last one in 2048.

Canada had a total installed capacity of 158 GW (2024) of which nuclear represented about 7% (11.6 GW), contributing to 14% of the country’s power mix (Enerdata’s Global Energy Research).
