The Canadian government has announced its intention to accelerate the development of a major expansion of LNG Canada, a large-scale LNG export project located in Kitimat (British Columbia) on the country’s west coast, by including it on a list of projects eligible for fast-track approval. This list — referred to by officials as a "first tranche" — features projects deemed nationally significant and prioritized for expedited review.
LNG Canada's first phase, which reached a final investment decision (FID) in 2018, began exports in June 2025. The consortium, including Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi, and Kogas, holds a 40-year export license allowing it to export up to 14 Mt/year of LNG. Partners are currently assessing whether to move forward with doubling the facility’s capacity to 28 Mt/year.
Although the LNG Canada expansion already has federal approval, the consortium has not yet reached a final investment decision. By placing the project on the fast-track list, the government aims to facilitate that decision and support the project's advancement.
