Canada grants 40-year export license to the 12 Mt/year Ksi Lisims LNG project

The Canada Energy Regulator (CER) has approved an application from the Ksi Lisims LNG, a 12 Mt/year floating LNG project located near the town of Gingolx in British Columbia (western Canada), to export LNG for a period of 40 years. The Ksi Lisims LNG project will be able to export up to 22.4 bcm/year of LNG from its proposed facility, and the CER license includes a maximum export quantity of 778.3 bcm of natural gas over the 40-year term.

Ksi Lisims LNG is a project led by the Nisga’a Nation, with the support of Rockies LNG, a consortium of Canadian gas producers, and the Houston-based Western LNG company. The terminal would be connected to the Montney area gas supply through a connection to TC Energy’s dormant Prince Rupert Gas Transmission project or Enbridge’s similarly idle Westcoast Connector Gas Transmission project.

In 2021, Canada produced nearly 191 bcm of natural gas and exported over 79 bcm. The Ksi Lisims LNG project would significantly increase Canada’s LNG export capacity, as LNG exports only amounted to 5 mcm in 2021 (246 mcm in 2020).
