Canada fully commissions the 695 MW Keeyask hydro project

Keeyask Hydropower Limited Partnership, a partnership between Manitoba Hydro (75%) and four Manitoba First Nations (25%), has fully commissioned the 695 MW Keeyask hydropower project located on the Nelson River approximately 30 km west of Gillam, in Manitoba (Canada), in the Split Lake Resource Management Area, after the last of the seven units entered into service. The CAD8.7bn (US$6.7bn) project, which is expected to generate 4.4 TWh/year, entered construction in 2014. The power plant, built by Bechtel, Barnard Construction Company and EllisDon, was originally expected to be operational in 2020 at a cost of CAD6.5bn (US$5bn).

Hydropower accounts for 55% of Canada's installed capacity (end-2021), with 82.4 GW.
