Canada approves Enbridge's gas pipeline expansion (3.1 bcm/year)

Enbridge has received the Canadian governmental approval for the expansion of its Westcoast gas pipeline system in British Columbia, Canada (Enbridge press release, 24/04/2026).

The CAD4bn (USD3bn) Sunrise Expansion Program is designed to add about 300 mcf/d (8.5 mcm/d or 3.1 bcm/year) of natural gas transportation capacity to the southern portion of the Westcoast pipeline system. To do so, the project proposes the construction of new pipeline segments along the existing system, additional natural gas compression, and upgrades and modifications to existing facilities. The expansion program is expected to start construction works in July 2026, with a targeted date of commencement in late 2028. Once operational the project should strengthen energy security and affordability by supporting access to natural gas during periods of peak demand.

Currently, Enbridge’s Westcoast pipeline system has the capacity to transport up to 3.6 bcf/d (37.2 bcm/year) from Gordondale near the border between the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta down to the Canada-US border at the Huntingdon/Sumas, covering more than 2,900 km. The natural gas transported through the pipeline supports electric power generation, industrial activity across BC and global LNG exports.
