The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has allowed Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to continue operating the "B" units of its Pickering nuclear power plant, located in Canada’s Ontario province, until December 2026. Pickering’s “B” units feature four reactors (Units 5 to 8) totalling 2 GW of capacity, enough to power 2 million Canadian homes.
Ontario Power Generation’s Pickering nuclear plant comprises two reactor facilities with a total of eight Candu reactor units. Units 5-8 (Pickering B) began operating between 1983 and 1986, while Units 1-4 (Pickering A) began operations in the early 1970s. Units 1 through 3 have already been decommissioned, and Unit 4 is set to be turned off in December 2024. OPG plans to refurbish Units 5 through 8 after 2026.
As of end-2023, nuclear represented 9% of Canada’s installed capacity with 14 GW and 14% of its power generation with 89.6 TWh.
