Canada aims to reduce its GHG emissions by 45-50% of by 2035 from 2005 levels

The Canadian Government has set its 2035 Emissions Reduction Target, aiming to cut its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions between 45% and 50% compared to 2005 levels, as a part of its pathway to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. To comply with the Paris Agreement and the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act (CNZEAA), the Canadian government has set its new target before 2025, estimating that it represents a realistic target according to the country’s present circumstances. The goal, which was previously set at 40- 45% below 2005 levels by 2030, is backed up by Canada’s 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP)—a comprehensive plan to reduce emissions, strengthen Canada's economy, and support household affordability.

In 2025, Canada is expected to submit its NDC to the United Nations, including a high-level description of the key measures the Government of Canada intends to take to meet the target and the latest projections of Canada's annual GHG emissions, as required by the CNZEAA. In addition, the country will also publish two progress reports (in 2025 and 2027) on the implementation of the 2030 ERP, which may highlight additional actions that could help Canada achieve its 2030 target.
