Cameroon's updated NDC sets a 35% conditional emission cut target by 2030

Cameroon has updated its first Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), setting an unconditional greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction target of 12% and a conditional reduction target up to 35% of the business-as-usual (BAU) scenario by 2030. Under its BAU scenario, Cameroon estimates GHG emissions at around 119 MtCO2eq by 2030, which is 71% more than in 2010 (reference year). The 35% cut would limit GHG emissions by more than 42 MtCO2eq to 77 MtCO2eq. 45% of the savings (over 19 MtCO2eq) would be reached in the forestry and land use sector, nearly 32% in the energy sector, 16% in agriculture and over 6% in the waste sector.

In in its first NDC (2016), the country pledged to cut its GHG emissions by 2035 below a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario by 32% with international support (conditional target). Cameroon did not set an unconditional target at the time. In 2010, agriculture accounted for 69% of the country’s total GHG emissions (35 MtCO2eq), followed by energy (18%) and waste (12%). CO2 emissions from energy combustion are stable since 2014 at around 6 MtCO2. Transport is responsible for half of these emissions (49%), followed by industry (2%) and the energy sector (14%).
