The Government of Cameroon has launched a competitive bidding process for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the 500 MW Kikot-Mbébé hydropower plant, located 60 km northwest of Yaoundé, in central Cameroon. The hydropower plant, located on the Sanaga River, is set to become one of the largest in the country and will feature six Kaplan turbines, each with a capacity of 83.3 MW.
Construction is planned to start in 2025, with commissioning expected in 2030. The XAF650b (€1bn) project is being developed by Kikot-Mbébé Hydro Power Company (KHPC), a joint venture equally owned by the State of Cameroon and Électricité de France (EDF).
As of end-2023, hydro represented about 45% of Cameroon’s installed capacity with 812 MW, accounting for around 60% of the country's power generation. Cameroon has the second highest hydroelectric potential in Africa: 23 GW of technical potential, 40% of which is exploitable under good economic conditions.
