Calpine and ExxonMobil partner on CO2 storage for a US gas-fired power plant

ExxonMobil and Calpine Corporation have signed an agreement to transport and store up to 2 MtCO2/year from Calpine’s 845 MW Baytown Energy Center, a gas-fired CHP plant near Houston, Texas (United States). This collaboration is part of Calpine's Baytown CCS Project, designed to capture CO2 emissions from the facility, enabling to produce 500 MW of low-carbon electricity and a 24/7 supply of low-carbon electricity to Texas customers and steam to nearby industrial sites. The advancement of this project remains contingent on supportive government policy, customer power sales agreements, and receipt of necessary regulatory permits.

This agreement is ExxonMobil’s sixth CCS customer, increasing the company’s total contracted CO2 to approximately 16 Mt/year. The CO2 from Calpine’s facility will be integrated into ExxonMobil’s extensive CO2 pipeline system, which supports both enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and permanent CO2 sequestration along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
