The US state of California will ban the sale of new gasoline vehicles by 2035, as the California Air Resources Board approved a plan to phase out the sale of gas-powered cars over the next 13 years.
The rule will be implemented over time. 35% of new cars, SUVs and small pickups sold in California will be required to be zero-emission vehicles by 2026. That quota will increase annually and will reach 51% of all new car sales in 2028, 68% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. The plan would also allow 20% of zero-emission cars sold to be plug-in hybrids. Used vehicles will not be impacted by the new rule.
This adopted plan is the continuation of the 2020 executive order signed by the Governor of California, mandating that all vehicles sold in the state must be zero emission by 2035.
