California (US) targets 20 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2045

The state government of California (United States) has unveiled a plan to target 20 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2045. The state previously aimed for 3 GW of offshore wind by 2030, 15 GW by 2045 and 20 GW by 2050. In May 2022, the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) issued auction details and lease terms for the development of up to 4.5 GW of offshore wind energy off the state of California. The Proposed Sale Notice provides information about five potential areas that could be available for leasing in the Morro Bay and Humboldt wind energy areas (which consist of about 373,268 acres or 151,056 hectares). Its California lease sale is the first on the Pacific coast. At the federal level, the United States target 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 (only 42 MW in 2021).
