The offshore construction firm Cadeler has installed the final wind turbine at the 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 (BKR 3) offshore wind park, located in Germany’s North Sea. Cadeler installed the final of 83 Siemens Gamesa turbines (SG 11.0-200 DD, 11 MW each) using its vessel Wind Osprey. The first turbine of the project had been installed in June 2024.
The Borkum Riffgrund 3 project, which is scheduled for completion in 2025, is jointly owned by Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure. Ørsted was awarded the rights to build Borkum Riffgrund 3 in the 2017 and 2018 auctions with bids of €0/MWh. The project will be located close to Ørsted's other offshore wind parks off the coast of Northern Germany, cumulating 1.1 GW with the Gode Wind 3 wind park, enough to power more than a million German households.
As of end 2023, Germany had a total wind capacity of nearly 66 GW, including 8.4 GW of offshore wind. Germany targets to reach 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, 40 GW by 2035, and at least 70 GW by 2045.
