BW ESS breaks ground on 1 GW/5.7 GWh battery storage project in Germany

BW ESS has started building its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Germany, marking the groundbreaking of a 1 GW/5.7 GWh facility after acquiring full ownership of the project earlier in 2026 (BW ESS press release, 01/07/2026).

Situated in the Mansfeld-Südharz district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, the Klostermansfeld BESS is presented by BW ESS as one of Europe’s largest battery energy storage projects and the largest project of its kind in Germany to date.

According to a spokesperson for the company, the project is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2028 (ESS-news, 01/07/2026).

BW ESS is a global energy storage owner and operator with operations across the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Sweden. The company currently operates more than 540 MWh of BESS, has approximately 11 GWh under construction, and maintains a development pipeline totaling several gigawatts.
