BW ESS has filed a 700 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project for environmental review under Australia’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act (EPBC Act portal, 06/05/2026).
The Bannaby BESS is planned to be developed in the Upper Lachlan Shire, located in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. It is intended to be connected to the existing Bannaby 500 kV substation, which is integrated into the NSW high-voltage transmission network. The storage duration of the system has not been specified.
The start of construction is expected in 2027, contingent upon securing all required approvals. The installation is expected to operate for a minimum of 30 years, with continuous 24/7 remote monitoring.
The Switzerland‑based company BW ESS currently operates 540 MWh of BESS, has approximately 11 GWh under or in pre‑construction, and maintains a development pipeline of around 8 GW across the UK, Australia, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Sweden.
