Bulgaria begins building a 170 km, 1.8 bcm/year natural gas link with Serbia

Bulgaria has begun the construction of a 170 km natural gas pipeline linking it with Serbia. The reversible flow pipeline, once completed, will have a capacity of 1.8 bcm/year and It will stretch from the Bulgarian town of Novi Iskar to Niš, in southern Serbia, running 62 km in Bulgaria and 108 km in Serbia.

The pipeline is expected to be operational by the end of 2023. Belgrade has started construction on its side of the pipeline since February 2022. The infrastructure is listed as a project of common interest by the European Union, which financed it for an amount of €49m through the Connecting Europe Facility fund.

The interconnector will allow the flow of non-Russian gas to Serbia through the Southern gas corridor and LNG terminals in Greece and Turkey.

In October 2022, Bulgaria and Greece opened a 182 km, 3 bcm/year gas interconnector which is connected to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline project and carries Azeri gas.
