The British nuclear regulator (ONR, Office for Nuclear Regulation) has granted its first approval regarding the construction of the Hinkley Point C nuclear power project in Somerset (United Kingdom). The endorsement concerns the placement of the plant's structural concrete, which will shelter the service galleries, in particular the cooling water system.
In September 2016, the United Kingdom approved the £18bn (€24bn) Hinkley Point C project, developed by EDF, CGNPC and CNNC. The project will consist of two 1,630 MW Areva EPR reactors, expected to be commissioned in 2024 at the earliest with full operation in 2025. In addition, partners are also involved in the development of a third nuclear project, the Sizewell C project, which would be jointly developed by the two companies (80% EDF, 20% CGNPC).
