Brazil’s Eletrobras will sell its gas-fired power plants portfolio (2.1 GW)

The Brazilian energy utility Eletrobras has begun a process to sell its gas-fired power plants. The company has revealed that its gas-fired power plants portfolio includes a dozen plants that will amount to a total capacity of 2,059 MW in 2025. The move aims to help Eletrobras achieve its goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions and simplify its corporate structure.

In June 2022, Eletrobras was officially privatised after a BRL29.3bn (US$5.7bn) sale. The privatization of Eletrobras was a priority for the Brazilian government, which previously owned a 72% stake in the company. Following the sale, which included issuing new shares, the government reduced its stake in Eletrobras to 45%.

Eletrobras is responsible for 23% of Brazil's capacity, with an installed capacity of over 42 GW and a production of over 170 TWh (2022). In the transmission segment, the company holds about 40% of the country's transmission lines. The vast majority of Eletrobras’ capacity is made up of hydro (40 GW in 2022).
