Brazil’s BNDES approves fundings for 1.5 GW of renewables

The Brazilian state-owned development bank BNDES has approved financings totalling BRL3.5bn (US$665m) for two wind and one solar power projects adding 1.5 GW of installed capacity in Bahia and Mina Gerais (Brazil).

The bank will lend BRL1.5bn (US$285m) for the 846 MW Serra do Assuruá wind project developed by Engie in the municipality of Gentio do Ouro (Bahia). The plant will comprise 24 wind parks with 188 Vestas wind turbines. Full commissioning is scheduled for June 2025.

Pan American Energy Group has secured a support or BRL900m (US$170m) from the BNDES for its 423 MW Novo Horizonte wind project consisting in 10 wind parks in the Bahian municipalities of Novo Horizonte, Boninal, Brotas de Macaúbas, Ibitiara, Oliveira dos Brejinhos and Piatã.

Finally, the 231 MW Boa Sorte solar project in the Minas Gerais municipality of Paracatu, developed by Atlas Group, will receive BRL1.1bn (US$210m) from the bank. It should enter operations in January 2025.

At end-2021, wind accounted for 11% of Brazil’s installed capacity with 20.8 GW and solar for 6.8% with 13 GW.
