The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy has announced that electricity imports from Venezuela would resume after a break of more than four years since the deterioration of bilateral relations in 2019. Âmbar, an energy company of the Brazilian J&F group, should be importing electricity generated by the Guri hydropower plant in Venezuela thanks to an authorization given by the Electricity Sector Monitoring Committee (CMSE) since November 2023 and it should be valid until January of 2024. The measure is expected to reduce energy costs for consumers in the Brazilian state of Roraima, which is the country's only state not connected to the national grid. Since the pause on Venezuelan electricity, this state has used electricity from more expensive diesel-fired power plants.
Brazil is a net importer of power. Net electricity imports have been decreasing since 2016 from nearly 41 TWh to nearly 13 TWh in 2022 (18 TWh imported and 5 TWh exported).
