The Brazilian nuclear company Eletronuclear has resumed civil works at the 1,245 MW Angra 3 nuclear project in Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). A consortium comprising Ferreira Guedes, Matricial and ADtranz signed a contract in February 2022 to complete the concrete superstructure of the reactor building and carry out part of the electromechanical assembly, including the closing of the containment steel sphere and the installation of the used fuel pool, the polar bridge and the semi-gantry crane. Another tender will take place to select the company or consortium that will complete the civil works and electromechanical assembly of the plant under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract. In October 2019, China’s National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), EDF (France) and Rosatom (Russia) were shortlisted as a potential partner.
The construction of Angra 3 started in the 1980s but was halted owing to a lack of resources. The project was relaunched in 2010, but construction paused again after a corruption scandal. Eletronuclear and its previous partners, which included Areva (now a subsidiary of EDF), have built 70% of the plant and bought 80% of the nuclear reactor equipment. In May 2020, Eletronuclear delayed the commissioning of the Angra 3 nuclear project from 2026 to 2027, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
