Brazil to invest US$300 in second generation ethanol plant

The board of Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Economico e Social (BNDES) of Brazil approved a financing of US$300m Bioflex Agroindustrial (GranInvest) to build a second generation ethanol production plant. The power plant will be build in São Miguel dos Campos, Alagoas, by GranBio and will have a production capacity of 82 million liters using biomass conversion technology along with sugarcane straw and bagasse as raw material. It is the first commercial scale plant in Brazil and the second in the world (the other is located in Italy). The project is part of the Support Programme for Industrial Innovation Sector Sugarcane and Sucroquímico (PAISS.)

The second generation ethanol is an alternative that will help to make Brazilian ethanol more sustainable. The use of straw and bagasse allow industrial productivity ethanol gets to about 10 liters per hectare, which means an increase of up to 45% compared to current levels.
