Brazil’s national nuclear company Eletronuclear has delayed the completion of its 1,245 MW Angra III nuclear plant project from 2026 to 2027, due to the coronavirus epidemic. The group aims to select a partner by 2023 to help complete and operate the nuclear project. In October 2019, China’s National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), EDF (France) and Rosatom (Russia) were selected as a potential partner to complete and operate its nuclear project. The preferred partner will have to invest in the completion of Angra III, which requires BRL15bn (US$3.7bn).
The construction of Angra III started in the 1980s but halted owing to a lack of resources. The project was relaunched in 2010, but construction paused again after a corruption scandal. Eletronuclear and its previous partners, which included Areva (now subsidiary of EDF), have built 70% of the plant and bought 80% of the nuclear reactor equipment. A total of BRL9bn (US$1.7bn) has already been invested in the project. Eletrobras, which controls Eletronuclear, has set aside BRL13.9bn (US$2.7bn) to invest in the Angra III project over the 2020-2024 period and Eletronuclear has already secured a BRL10bn (US$2.5bn) loan from the Brazilian development bank BNDES to develop Angra III.
