Brazil clears Omega's acquisition of a 583 MW wind portfolio

The Brazilian Administrative Council for Economic Defence (CADE) has approved the sale by state-owned power utility Eletrobras of a 583 MW wind portfolio in Rio Grande do Sul to Omega Geração. In August 2020, Eletrobras agreeed to sell its 78% stake in the 402 MW Santa Vitória do Palmar wind plant and its 100% stake in the 181 MW Hermenegildo 1, 2, 3 and Chui 9 wind projects in Brazil to Omega Geração for a total consideration of BRL1.5bn (US$280m). Omega Geração already has a wind, hydro and solar portfolio of 1,195 MW. In August 2020, the company igned a binding agreement to acquire a 50% stake in two wind plants with a total capacity of 182.6 MW from EDF Renewables. The two wind plants were commissioned in 2017 and are the first tranche of a wind complex with a capacity of 800 MW.

In addition, Renova Energia has accepted a loan offer from asset manager Quadra Capital to complete Phase A (438 MW) of the 743 MW Alto Sertão III onshore wind project in Bahia (Brazil). The company filed for bankruptcy in October 2019. The first two phases of the Sertão onshore wind were commissioned respectively in December 2014 (Alto Sertão I, 294 MW) and August 2017 (Alto Sertão II, 386 MW).

As of September 2020, wind accounts for around 9% of Brazil's installed capacity with over 15 GW. More than 4 GW are under construction and 33.8 GW are under development.
