Bradwell nuclear project will start approval process in the UK

General Nuclear Services (GNS), the joint venture of French energy group EDF and Chinese nuclear group China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC), will soon move ahead with its Bradwell nuclear project in the United Kingdom, as the British government asked the Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Environment Agency to start the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) of the UK HPR1000 reactor. The GDA marks the start of the approval process and should last around four years.

The Bradwell project is still in an early pre-planning stage. It would be developed in Essex and would consist of a Chinese-designed Hualong reactor. In September 2016, the United Kingdom approved the £18bn (€24bn) Hinkley Point C project, developed by EDF, CGNPC and CNNC. The project will consist of two 1,630 MW Areva EPR reactors, expected to be commissioned in 2024 at the earliest with full operation in 2025. In addition, partners are also involved in the development of a third nuclear project, the Sizewell C project, which would be jointly developed by the two companies (80% EDF, 20% CGNPC).
